Terry Saltz and his friends have formed a pool team and joined the local bar league. In the early morning hours after their first match, a girl from another team is murdered in the parking lot of her apartment complex.

That same night, one of Bud Hanratty's best friends is killed in a car accident on Dead Man's Curve in nearby Cleveland. Bud doesn't believe the accident happened the way the Cleveland police are describing it.

Are the guys going to risk Sergeant Alan Bushnell's wrath by interfering in another one of his investigations? Oh hell yeah.

EARLY EIGHT TERRY SALTZ MYSTERIES Book 3 edition by L T Fawkes Literature Fiction eBooks

L.T. Fawkes does dialogue with a flair few writers muster these days. With a fantastic mastery of variety in "voice," Fawkes renders her Terry Saltz character and his cronies with palpable integrity and meticulous detail. Funny, tough, kind and ultimately moral, despite his ruffian nature, and despite finding himself in situations so wonderfully described (at one point he is actually part of a "degenerate board meeting" and I just laughed and laughed)... Fawkes has a protagonist in Saltz that it's impossible not to like and a band of buddies that are delightful to spend time with on the page--Bump rocks!--and the whole of it is crafted with a fine sense of humor that keeps the mystery fresh and interesting.

Even the minor characters, the ones that "don't matter," really do matter. Fawkes doesn't treat any of the lives in her story as insignificant, and she renders them each neatly and with skill. So, even though I confess to not being able to figure the damn mystery out until the end---I'm usually pretty good at that---I have to say that every wrong turn I took was based on the fine construction of the characters populating this delightful universe and the plot that drives it. If you like puzzles, grab this one.

EARLY EIGHT TERRY SALTZ MYSTERIES Book 3 edition by L T Fawkes Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I love this three-novel series because the characters are so real to me. The action and suspense are good too, but it's so refreshing to focus on people who live paycheck to paycheck and have jobs like delivering pizza and doing construction work--people who really appreciate the simple pleasures of life! I also love this author's Fillmore novels!
A decent little murder mystery with a bit of an unusual protagonist. Terry Saltz is a working man who one day made the mistake of getting drunk and high and committing some mayhem that got him sent to jail for a while. When he got out, he started putting his life back together, going on the wagon and getting some jobs as carpenter and part-time bouncer for a local bar and grill. And solving murders on the side.

Early Eight is the third murder mystery featuring this particular character, but enough backstory is filled in along the way that it's never an obstacle to getting involved with the characters and following the way the story goes. The mystery itself involves two simultaneous deaths--an attractive but self-centered woman strangled in her car after a pool tournament, and an older real-estate magnate planning to divorce his wife who perishes in a fatal auto accident. Is the accident murder? If so, are they connected? And did Terry's older brother Berk have anything to do with the crimes?

As murder mysteries go, this is a fun read. Far too often in literature, "working class" is synonymous with "stupid." It's interesting to see a mystery where working stiffs are portrayed not as rubes but as intelligent people in their own right. The motives, methods, and resolution are believable, and the story was fun.
It ain't lydia-cher, but I loved the whole 3-book series!
kept my attention and moved right along
I am a mystery fan and a pool player in leagues
hard to find that combo
I would reccomend it my teammates the ones that read that is
I've enjoyed all the Terry Saltz books and can't wait for another one. Would highly recommend everybook written by L.T. Fawkes.
"Early Eight" by L.T. Hawkes is the kind of story that hooks you and won't let go. While it's somewhat implausablle that the local law enforcement officers would allow a group of citizens to do their investigating it is a captivating who-done-it that won't let you go. I found this to be a fun read, light, sometimes humorous, and always entertaining, so take a few hours and enjoy yourself...
Terry and the gang are back again in this third outing of L.T. Fawkes Working Man mysteries. It is another murder and another case for the guys to get together and try to solve it. If you haven't read A Cold Slice and Lights out, I strongly recommend that you do, you won't be lost if you don't but you'll have a greater appreciation for the characters if you do.

I am a huge fan of this series and the characters who populate the pages. There is a easy going laid back voice to LT Fawkes books that I like very much.
