This is a very interesting book, and a good deal (free) for kindle readers. This book is an eyewitness account of a very complicated bit of history, from about mid 1918 to mid-1919 in Siberia, in the midst of the utter chaos unleashed by Russia's civil war. The Russian state has collapsed, Russian society has disintegrated in the face of the civil war's brutal violence and pillage, and the Bolshevik, White Russian, Czech, Japanese, British, and American armies range back and forth through Siberia's vast space.The author of this book is the commander of a second-rate British garrison battalion sent into this mess. His account of what was happening on the ground, as well as his impressions of the various personages and combatants, is utterly fascinating, as are his ultimately futile attempts to redress Russia's many ills (lecturing radicalized Russian workers on the British labor movement, etc.).
While the author seems to have handled the military aspects of his duties rather well, he seems rather naive and out of his depth (without realizing it) regarding political matters, and in particular offers a much more favorable impression of Kolchak than recorded in the history books.
I would have rated the book five stars except for two issues:
1) at least in the kindle edition, in several instances paragraphs simply end in mid sentence, and it is not clear how much text is missing.
2) at some points, the author's naïveté and British hubris become rather cringe-inducing, although it must be said that he seems to have performed a very difficult assignment in a rather creditworthy manner.
All in all, a. very worthwhile read about a fascinating period.

Too boring to get past the first 10 pages. And this is from a person who considers "War and Peace" a page-turner.
Pretty decent historical nonfiction book......I liked the story and the way the author wrote
To get the most out of this book you have to know what and who Col John Ward is. He is a senior official of the British trade union movement, but this is not mentioned in the book. I can only assume that he was very well known person at the time the book was published, shortly after his return from Siberia. It is one mans perspective of the events that took place in Russia post World War One, and not a bad book for all that.
The book tell the battalion story on its part in the Russian revolution,
The interesting part is maybe not the story about how garrison troops fought well in Sibiria. The surprising part is that a British officer in 1919 wrote how the Japanese would behave 20 years later
I enjoy this first hand account from a Battalion commander from the British army that was part of the Allied intervention into Russia in 1918-1920.
Interesting little book. It gives an interesting look at all parties involved from the Russian and Bolsheviks to the Allies, Great Britain, France, Japan, US and the Czechs. It does not go into depth on most subjects but the insight given by the Commander of the 22nd Middlesex Regiment are very good. He explains the infighting on all parties involved and how they would determine the ultimate outcome of the war. His unit leaves before the end, but his narrative gives hope for the Russians and hopefully the Russian people he had to deal with.
I enjoyed this short book. Col. Ward is a bit of a nob but he meets all types of interesting people on the White Russian side of the Russian Civil War. Kolchak, Semyonov, Kalmykov, he meets them all in his travels in Siberia and he has a lot of interesting things to say about the Japanese and their ambitions in the Far East. All in all, it's a good eyewitness account of an interesting time and place in history.
