COMPULSION hooked me with it's alluring Southern Gothic charms, beautiful writing, and made me fall in love with it's richly rooted Southern history. Then PERSUASION came along and swept me off my feet with it's enchanting mysteries, magic, and oh so addicting romance! This sequel was everything I loved about COMPULSION and a whole lot more!Jumping right back into Barrie and Eight's world felt like coming home. I couldn't wait to devour what this story would uncover. This time around Martina threw in a few surprises, answered a few lingering questions I had at the end of Compulsion, and left me wanting the next book! This book has suspense, love, romance, magic, curses, mystery and everything I except a beautifully crafted Southern Gothic book to have. Did I mention Romance?
I don't know what it is about a Southern setting and it's romance, but when written well it literally sweeps me off my feet, and leaves me sighing right along with the characters. Barrie, and Eight have this romance that is part sweet, part frustrating, and part I want to whisk them away so they can ride off into the sunset together. I love reading those stolen moments they have together. What I love most about Barrie and Eight is there little touches that make Barrie's heart beat faster. The lean ins, and soft kisses. Their stolen moment on the balcony and all the other times after. Then there's the other side of their relationship that had me on edge. When magic, romance, and curses are involved, mayhem is bound to happen, and trust will be tested. This time there's a lot more at stake for these two that may cost them both their hearts.
It's not just Barrie and Eight that bring this story to life. With a lively cast of characters who can be viewed as friends foes and villains a like, everyone is tied together by the secrets, and curses that bound them to Watson Island in some fashion or another. I love the paranormal characters as much as I love the ones tied to Watson Island. Normally I'm not a fan of the "bad guys", but sometimes it's hard to not like character once you realize they're just as bound to the curses of Watson Island, as everyone else, and doing what they can to survive or break the curse. However, I'm still not a fan of a few characters, but I like that I could at least understand their motive in all that is going on.
I love that just as I think I have things figured out, there's a new twist, or another secret that is revealed, making it harder to determine how things will end. Trust me, that ending was.... well let's just say, I NEED BOOK 3 RIGHT NOW! What I loved in COMPULSION was taken to a whole new level in PERSUASION. This book has left me wondering who's persuading who, and who's love is real or compelled by magic, and what is going to happen next. I admit it, this time around I thought I was prepared for all Martina was going to throw my way in her book, but she found a way to hit me right in the book feelings.
Martina Boone's writing is spell binding. Everything she describes vibrantly comes to life. Her words are elegantly pieced together, creating an addicting story I can't stop reading. Reading her books has a similar feel to reading a story that has been passed down for generations. It's deeply rooted in Southern history, tied together by generations of family magic and curses, who's closely guarded secrets you can't wait to uncover. I am addicted to her books! Martina Boone blew me away with her debut, Compulsion (you can read my review for it here), and completely blind sided me with her sequel, PERSUASION. I loved this book just as much as I loved her debut! I can not wait for book three!

Persuasion Heirs of Watson Island Martina Boone Books Reviews
This book is a great read for teens and an easy, fairly quick read for adults. My only complaint is that it takes a year for the next book to come out!
It's an interesting read with an intriguing mystery. the development of the characters and their relationships is well done . it still kept me reading however it is slightly more on the slow side then other ya books I've read
Starts off where compulsion left off. Action packed, innocently romantic, and super natural. I read it quickly and can't wait for the next book.
Loved this book and the characters; wanted immediately to dive into the next one!
I was so happy to start and finish the novel. It was a little slow at the beginning and picked up toward the end. The mix of new and old characters helps the story move along. I am ready to read the third installment of the series!
Compulsion was such a beautiful book, both to read and as a physical object, that I wanted to wait and read the hardcover version of Persuasion. However, I was too impatient, so I bought the hardcover and the book. I was not disappointed, but now I'm mad that I have to wait for the next one. The new character of Obediah brings new levels of mystery and drama. Plus, we get to see Cassie actually reacting to past trauma like a real teen would. I love to hate Cassie. I also love how this book digs deeper into not only how these present characters are traumatized by their recent pasts, but how the land and families are traumatized by the curses and gifts, and by the longstanding impacts of slavery and the Civil War. I can't wait to see how Martina Boone digs into the gorgeous knot she has tied with these stories in the next book!
I loved the first book in the series of The Heirs of Watson Island. It felt different, and it felt so Southern I could almost smell the food and the hear the sounds.
It was as if it was almost complete and I would have enjoyed it as a stand alone. But, knowing the other mysteries were going to be unraveled and I could get to see more of Eight and Barrie and Cassie... I wanted to go back to it.
And maybe I was expecting too much of this book. It feels less than the first one, and it also feels like a preparation for what it's comming, because I know something big has to happen in the next installment, this feels a bit bland. But anyway, it's good and it's easy to read and it's enjoable and different from other YA. It has a strong sense of place, and of the South with its food and its drawl.
Though, I really will go and read the third one
I love it when an author can take a character from a previous story, and, building upon what has already been developed, surprise the reader by showing a new side in a new situation that is a bit unexpected while still remaining true. Martina Boone does just that with her three main characters in this second book of the COMPULSION series.
With PERSUASION, Martina's skill at painting vivid pictures with her words, and prying the reader into the very heart of her characters, is even more impressive. Persuasion does not present idealized, almost-perfect teens always behaving their best, but rather realistically portrayed, maturing young adults struggling to make their own decisions...and then dealing with the repercussions when they make a mistake (as teens do!).
But perhaps what I liked best about PERSUASION was the new magical element and character introduced in this story. Obadiah comes vividly alive (if he ever really was) and fascinated me with his persona and secrets., I felt compelled to turn the pages until the very end. I love the underpinnings of myth in this series and how the author has given them her own unique, modernized spin to show how similar and unifying folk tales can be across cultures.
Unlike many mid books in a series, PERSUASION definitely turns the pacing up a notch. The setting, the romance, the mystery -- all so darkly magical, I hated for the story to end.
At least there's the third book to look forward to!
