Sky Pirates is a wonderful homage to the writers of a previous age of science fantasy. In these pages you'll find an amalgamation of ER Burroughs Barsoom, coupled with Vance's Dying Earth, with a touch of CA Smith's decadent Zothique cycle. The plot moves at a fast clip, with morally ambiguous characters trying to stop a sorcerer from taking over the world with his hybrid army. Although this book wears its pulpy influences on its sleeve, King, being a modern writer, does not hesitate in getting into his character's heads & filling us in on backstory & spending time on character development. This is something that Smith, ERB, or to a lesser degree, Vance never had the opportunity to do, based on the times they were writing in. If your a fan of old school sword & sorcery, the dying earth genre or sword & planet fiction, pick up this novel.Product details

Sky Pirates eBook William King Reviews
This is definitely not the Mars of John Carter but it is one that I really enjoyed. Having recently reread the John Carter series this was a welcome recasting of that world. I, for one, hope that there is more to this (hopefully a series like Shadowblood). I found that I wanted to know more of Ulrik and his Sky Pirates. All the characters are well drawn and the world rich and intriguing. I agree with the other reviewer that a graphic novel is demanding to be done with this world and this hero.
Excellent novel, fast paced and wonderfully inventive! I've been a fan of mister King's work for many years and it's always action packed and oroginal!
William King never disappoints.
I went on a bit of a William King binge. It started with his Terrarch Chronicles, blew through the Kormak omnibus, and hit Sky Pirates somewhere in between. The reason I read so many of his books is simple. The man has a gift for world building. They creak with age and the scars of history. Wars have been fought, terrible powers unleashed, and those wounds may never heal. Stories set against those kind of backdrops feel more intense.
As for Sky Pirates specifically, let me put it this way Strong characters, a solid plot, and an awesome setting.
Plus, the title of the book is Sky Pirates, how could you possible say no?
It serves perfectly well for my style of reading. Each day I come back for more and love it. I'm not sure if you could like it if you're looking for something clasicall-ish, but if you're in for some easy to read fantasy action with futuristic science and magick with swords and soul and more willing to enjoy than analyze, you can hardly go wrong with this not-too-complex gem!

I read the book twice. I enjoyed it both times. High adventure in a beliveable world and a thinking hero. What else can you ask for?
One of my favorite William King books. He is one of the few authors who's stories really draw me into the story. I agree with the other reviewers...we want more!
