I wasnt overly thrilled by this book, but I liked it. The writing was well enough and the charachters were strong.....I just wish a heroine who is subjected to what Alwin was would, once, tell a man she loves and outright ruins her life and breaks her heart to jump in the lake with all his cruel treatment. It truly bothers,me that females in these stories are always forgiving. There wasnt anything fresh or exceptional here that would make me think to recommend this book.Tags : Highlander's Ransom (The Sinclair Brothers Trilogy, Book 1) - Kindle edition by Emma Prince. Highlander Ransom The Sinclair Brothers Trilogy Book 1 edition by Emma Prince Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I was first attracted to the covers of Emma Prince's novels so I bought the Highlander's Ransom to try. This book had a great creative storyline with interesting characters that I didn't want to put down. It's story is well written with just the right amount of time and encounters for their relationship to believably take root. The only thing that threw things off for me was after the two main characters went through everything and finally admitted their feeling for each other and the relationship bliss started, the Laird's original ransom plan wouldn't work so all of the sudden with in a moment notice he decided he didn't really love her and the clan was more important so he threw her under the bus so to speak. I appreciated the stories turn to the issue that would come between them however, it was just too quick and too over stated with no other thought process in the story to solve it. Then within a very short time again he switched back to he did loved her and he made a mistake, please take me back, which she did with not much issue. Then they were happy and in love again, and the story just ended without bringing the issue they faced up again or bringing an end to it. Other than this ending situation, I loved the story. I did read other reviews of this book and reviews of the authors other books which assures me her other books are even better than this one so I'm excited to read more of her books.
This is the first book I've read of the author and was pleased with the interesting storyline and that its pace kept me engaged. I find it annoying when the main characters hate each other over three quarters of the book or if the herione is supposed to be brave and smart but acts insipidly and makes horrible decisions. The herione does none of this, but rather learns quickly, is self reflective, and isn't afraid to show a little vulnerability when it's called for. Likewise, the hero makes his share of mistakes but doesn't take a year to figure out he's been a cad. I'm looking forward to reading about the second brother - and I'm even going to guess that it's the villian's sister who he falls in love with. I wonder if I'm right? I guess I better go find out!
This was my first introduction to Ms. Prince. She is a fantastic writer. Once I started reading "Highlander's Ransom" I didn't want to put it down. The author creates believable plots with memorable characters who are thrust into near impossible situations. Here we have a courageous and good woma, Lady Alwin Hewett, whose brother m, Lord Henry Hewett hopes by marrying Lady Alwin to Lord Raef Warren a strong alliance will be created. Unfortunately, Lord Hewett knows nothing about the cruel, self-centered but powerful Lord Warren. Wedding plans are made to be broken though. Laird Robert Sinclair and Burke Sinclair, with their men, stopped a lightly guarded wagon thinking goods would be found inside. To everyone's surprise, Lady Alwin is hidden inside! This wonderful story of twists and turns, changed feelings and minds, kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved the story and its ending but I am not giving either away!
I have read all of Emma Prince's books on the Scottish Border land sagas, during the reign of Robert the Bruce (so far ); and I can hardly wait until the next release due out in the fall of 2018! Every book has been a gem, with great attention paid to historical details; something which is important to me, given my love for the subject and the time period. Each story crackles with both action and steamy sexuality, so it's definitely NOT for those under age 18. I intend to read everything she has written; Don't laugh, I've read just about everything Eliza Knight, and Elizabeth Rose have written, and many others as well. I don't just read a lot of books, I voraciously devour them; and I can hardly wait until I can start on the next scrumptious course of all those sexy Scots!!
I purchased this book after looking around for a new Highlands romance series. I barely finished it. This was one of the most repetitive books I've ever read. The author spends a fair amount of time on her characters' internal musings. This doesn't typically bother me. I understand the point of character building. But good grief, one should not devote so much time to these musings if the characters NEVER have any new thoughts. By the middle of the book, I started skipping large sections in favor of reading dialogue (with a hope that it would at least move the story forward). By the end I began quizzing myself to see if could I predict the exact content of the next paragraph devoted to soliloquy. For example Oh, here we go again. The heroine claims that she and the hero have passion. But that's not all! I bet she...respects him! CHECK. And he...respects her! CHECK! (Seriously, this exact paragraph occurred at least three times in the latter half of the novel). If the author removed the repetitive paragraphs (and a good editor definitely would have), the novel would shrink by 25 to 30%.
And, as a petty aside, can we talk for a second about the hero's obsession with the smell of the heroine's hair? Let's be real. If you spent a week riding on a horse, sleeping next to campfires, surrounded by grown men who hadn't bathed for nearly two weeks, and not bathing yourself (beyond your face and hands) the entire time, YOUR HAIR WOULD NOT SMELL LIKE ROSES. But the hero tells us that hers does. Repeatedly.
I was immensely disappointed with this novel and frustrated by the author's insistence on pushing me out of the story with her unnecessary, repetitive, and wordy filler. Needless to say, I will not be reading anymore of her work, and I wouldn't recommend her to others either.
