Oh. My. Goodness. This is one of those books that will stay with me for a long time. It will hold a special place in my heart for its powerfully important message, but it will also haunt my dreams—and not necessarily in a good way—for its desolate, terrifying story.

It's 1943. Sixteen-year-old Hana and her nine-year-old sister, Emi, happily live on Korea's beatific Jeju Island where their father fishes and their mother, along with Hana, dive in the ocean catching fish in nets. One day, Hana pops up from beneath the ocean's surface and sees a Japanese soldier approaching Emi, who is sitting on the beach guarding the day's catch. Hana knows this man spells trouble. She swims to shore and distracts him from Emi, and in exchange for this supreme act of sisterly love, Hana is kidnapped and sold into military sexual slavery as a "comfort woman" for Japanese soldiers. The book alternates chapters between Hana's appalling tale of unimaginable abuse and that of Emi, who tells her side of the story at age 77 in 2011.

This is historical fiction at its best. The book, which every woman should read, reveals a little-known but extraordinarily shocking and shameful piece of world history, and it does it in a way that becomes achingly personal. It is impossible to read this book and not be profoundly touched by it.

I've never heard of a 'comfort woman' before, and this book (though "fiction") did a great job to telling their story. I was heart broken for both Hana and Emi, and things they had to endure mad me mad and sad, but I couldn't put this book down, their stories also captivated me. It was a great read.
This is easily the best book I have read this year. I will forever remember what I learned in this book and I plan to do further reading. Truly outstanding writing filled with emotion and such depth in her characters. I thank Mary Lynn Bracht for the gift of this book! You are an artist with words.
Touchingly told, this story of two Korean sisters is a graphic and painful reminder of the thousands of women who suffered terrible fates during the long years of WWIII and the Korean War. It will s a fitting and timely reminder that women are still not safe in this world and we should never forget that
Suspenseful, heart and gut wrenching, at one point, she had me in tears. Such a powerful story of survival under the harshest circumstances. Comfort women is really a misnomer. They were essentially sex slaves to Japanese soldiers. This part of history was only a revealed a couple of decades ago, as too many women were still too ashamed of their past to talk about it. Even though none of this was their fault. This story of two sisters, who suffered each in two different ways, is laid past and present. Their stories are told in separate chapters. Nonetheless, the flow of their stories is easy to follow. I suspect this book will be turned into a movie. Similar to the Notebook, but based on actual historic events.
Tragic story about two sisters separated by war. Hana puts herself in harm's way to protect her younger sister and finds herself transported to Manchuria to be a 'comfort' woman to Japanese troops. Raped and abused, her life derails when she is made a sex slave and must endure horrific conditions, her only solace is that her innocent sister is safe. Little does she know that her sister's life takes a disastrous turn when North and South Korea fracture and she must deal with a police-style state. Forced into a marriage, the sister's lives have a weird kind of looking-glass quality and the twist toward the end leaves the reader with a satisfying conclusion.
This is a compelling story that I think will be with me for years. I loved the book. I became completely engaged with the characters and cried and laughed with them. Actually, mostly cried. Hana was a Korean girl of 16 when she was kidnapped by a Japanese soldier during the occupation of Korea by the Japanese during World War II. She was forced into sexual slavery “servicing” the Japanese soldiers as a “comfort woman”. Hana had allowed herself to be sacrificed in order to save her younger sister from the cruel fate. Hana’s struggles in trying to escape one especially cruel soldier and her little sister’s lifelong search for Hana are an unforgettable story. The story and wonderful writing make this a book well worth reading.
"White Chrysanthemum" is a heartbreaking and beautiful novel about Hana and Emi. During the Korea wartime, the japanese soldiers were dominating the country and, based on this scenario, Hana was having a peaceful life when, one day, a japanese soldier appeared at the beach and took her away (aka kidnap). I literally flew through the pages as I was hooked on what could happen to Emi and Hana. The chapters are alternated between the two sisters' point of view and I basically adored it. I have to emphasize that the emotions are so raw and intense that I found myself deeply connected to the characters, so much that, sometimes, I had to take a breath. Hana's feelings are so true her protective instinct towards her little sister, her endurance when facing the heavy struggles and her final feelings in the end of the book. Talking about Emi, I wasn't quite attached to her in the beginning of the story, but soon started to like and understand her. All the encounters throughout this book make "White Chrysanthemum" so thought-provoking and keep on thinking for a long time even after finished it. Mary Lynn Bracht is masterful in describing the reality of that period of time and conveying genuine emotions through this book. I highly recommend it (even if you are not asian)!
